It’s Spring, Let’s Paint Flowers!

May 21, 2023 by Bruce Katz

Dear Painters,

Flowers are in bloom everywhere. Let’s put out some beautiful bouquets and paint them from life in this hybrid Studio/Zoom workshop.

Let’s focus on painting flowers in an expressive, dynamic, looser way…a way to convey the essence of the flower or the arrangement, rather than a literal rendition. We’ll break down the process into bite sized steps to end up with completed paintings. Spoiler alert: it’s all about shapes, values and color!

It’s spring. Let’s Paint Flowers!

Saturday, June 17th, 2021
9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (Pacific Time)
In my studio or on zoom

Those joining on Zoom will set up their own still life subjects at home. Those coming to the studio can paint the subjects I’ll set up or bring your own.

Let’s set our goal on painting two different bouquets/groupings of flowers during the workshop. We’ll start with some value sketches in black & white and move towards full color paintings.

Once you register I’ll email you all some sample paintings of mine and others for ideas and inspiration.

Here’s the idea:

  • The workshop will consist of two 3-hour parts with an hour lunch break from 12:00-1:00.
  • This schedule will give us time to focus with more depth on the key elements of composition, value and color.
  • As we progress I’ll be able to review everyone’s work, answer questions, make suggestions, etc.
  • All painting mediums are welcome; paper or canvas as to your preference.
  • I’ll be able to have up to 6 painters in the studio.
  • Others can join the Zoom workshop on your laptop, desktop or iPad.
  • A materials list – and more details about the process – will be sent to you once you register.

The cost is $135. This amount will be fully refundable up to 3 days prior to the workshop; after that the registration fee is non-refundable.

Please feel free to email me any questions you have to bruce@brucekatzstudio.com

REGISTRATION is a two step process:

1) Send me an email and let me know you’re planning to register so I can put your name on the list.

2) Send me your payment on either PayPal (pay to bruce@brucekatzstudio.com) or Venmo (pay to @Bruce-Katz-9)  or by check. I’ll send you my address if you need it.

Painting the Urban Landscape in Plein Air

April 6, 2023 by Bruce Katz

Hopefully dry and warmer weather is setting in…let’s get out and paint and enjoy a day studying value and color in plein air.

The location will be in beautiful Alta Plaza Park in Pacific Heights, San Francisco, where we’ll have an opportunity to paint any number of great views, including city views mixed with the bucolic views of the park and looking out towards the Bay,

The workshop is for newer and intermediate plein air painters that want to learn and reinforce best practices and process for painting outdoors in the landscape and want to hone their skills in composition and “atmospheric perspective” (value and color to create space outdoors). I’ll work with you individually, guiding you from start to finish of your painting.

There will be a limit of 10 students in the workshop.

Meeting Location: The grassy area up the steps at the intersection of Jackson and Pierce streets.

Materials: A materials list will be emailed to you once you’ve registered. In addition to sketching materials, paints, canvases or paper, and brushes, you will need to bring a portable easel.

Cost of workshop: $100. This amount is refundable in full up to 3 days prior to the workshop.

Painting the Still Life: Shiny & See-Through Objects

December 15, 2022 by Bruce Katz

Dear Painters,

Let’s create some captivating compositions with objects that are reflective (shiny) together with some that are transparent (see-through). There are great lessons here to be learned and practiced that apply to all the paintings we do, including learning to see and render shapes, value and color. Not to mention the fun of painting the reflections in things and learning to paint see-through things. Sound interesting? Sound like fun? Please join me!

Painting the Still Life: Shiny & See-Through Objects

Thursday, February 23rd, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm PT

In my studio or on Zoom

Those joining on Zoom will set up their own still life subjects at home. Those coming to the studio can paint the subjects I’ll set up or bring your own.

I’ll be emailing you all some sample paintings of mine and others for ideas about what to include in your subjects. I recommend using reflective objects such as silver bowls, silverware and perhaps a coffee pot or toaster and transparent objects such as glasses, jars, and bottles. Or any reflective and transparent objects you can think of and put together into a still life composition. Think about using 3 to 5 objects in your composition.

Here’s the idea:

  • The workshop will consist of two 3-hour parts with an hour lunch break from 12:00-1:00.
  • This schedule will give us time to focus with more depth on the key elements of still life: composition, drawing, value, and color.
  • The first part of the day will be spent developing our compositions, drawing them in and doing a value sketch (in ink marker).
  • The second part of the day will be spent developing our full color paint sketches, using a limited color palette.
  • As we progress I’ll be able to review everyone’s work, answer questions, make suggestions, etc.
  • All painting mediums are welcome; paper or canvas as to your preference.
  • I’ll be able to have up to 5 painters in the studio. We’ll take a covid test before coming in so we can all feel safer about spending the day together.

Still Life Workshop: Painting the Everyday Chair

July 13, 2022 by Bruce Katz

Dear Painters,

Let’s focus on an object we use everyday and is often challenging to render: the simple and ubiquitous chair. Rendering chairs involves close observation and perspective drawing so they’ll sit convincingly on the floor surface. While that in itself is reason enough to practice drawing them, they also can make interesting painting compositions because of their unique shapes and perhaps also because of their symbolic nature as part of our everyday lives and homes. Let’s continue to practice creating captivating compositions and designs, using chairs – and something placed on them – as our subjects. Sound like fun? Please join me! Sound challenging? All the better!

  • The first part of the day will be spent developing our compositions, drawing them in and doing a value sketch (in ink marker).

“Hybrid” Zoom & In-Person Still Life Workshop: Flowers Revisited

July 26, 2021 by Bruce Katz

Dear Painters,

There’s often a fine edge between representation and abstraction. It can be challenging to hold on to representation as we try to get at the feeling or essence of a subject. Vice versa it’s often challenging to get more abstract as try to faithfully represent our subject. Let’s dance together on that edge while painting flowers – and focusing on their essence, not only their form.

This is a still life workshop where we’ll paint from life. Up to 5 of you (vaccinated) can be in my studio at Hunters Point Shipyard and another 5 could be on Zoom, painting from your own still life set-ups. Last time we did this (September) it seemed to work great. Those that come to the studio should be vaccinated and we’ll be masked with good airflow and air purification.

In this one-day workshop we’ll focus on shapes, composition, color and brushwork. We’ll warm up with some contour drawing and thumbnail sketches in paint before tackling our subjects.

All painting mediums are welcome.

A materials list will be sent to you as soon as you register. I’ll also be sending some good examples from contemporary painters of this kind of approach.

The cost of the workshop is $80.This amount will be fully refundable up to 3 days prior to the workshop; after that the registration fee is non-refundable.

Questions? Let me know!

July Zoom Workshop – The Figure in the Landscape (or Cityscape)

April 23, 2021 by Bruce Katz

Figures in the landscape (or in the cityscape) help enliven scenes in paintings and make them more interesting. Let’s focus on that in this next Zoom workshop.

The Figure in the Landscape (or Cityscape)
Thursday July 22nd and Friday, July 23rd, 2021
9:00 to 1:00 (Pacific Time) both days
On Zoom from the comfort of your own home!

– The workshop will take place on two consecutive days, 4 hours each day for a total of 8 hours.

– The first day will be spent developing a 4-value “grayscale” sketch of your subjects in paint, followed by a small full color sketch to get our colors/values where we want them. I’ll demonstrate to start us off at each stage.

– The second day we’ll start our full-color paintings and I’ll do a quick demonstration on the block in, followed by another demonstration on going from block in to finished painting. As we progress I’ll be able to review everyone’s work, answer questions, make suggestions, etc.

– I’ll be painting in gouache. You can paint with whatever medium you prefer.

– You can join the Zoom workshop on your laptop, desktop or iPad.

– A materials list will be sent to you as soon as you register.

Painting the Plein Air Landscape in Petaluma

March 7, 2021 by Bruce Katz

It’s summer…let’s get out and paint and enjoy a day studying value and color in plein air.

I’ll start this class doing a short value sketch demonstration on paper, in order to establish a value design in my scene. Each of you will do the same and we’ll have a value “roadmap” for our paintings.

The location will be somewhere (TBD) on one of the Old Lakeville Roads off of Lakeville Highway in Petaluma, where we’ll have an opportunity to paint a variety of subject matter, including the barns, farmhouses, farm animals and the beautiful Sonoma County landscape.

The workshop is for intermediate plein air painters that want to learn the process and best practices for painting outdoors in the landscape. I’ll work with you individually in a hands-on, step-by-step fashion, guiding you from start to finish of your painting. I’ll focus on aspects of the process including composition, drawing, color, paint handling, and in particular: VALUE!

There will be a limit of 10 students in the workshop.

It’s spring! Let’s Paint Flowers

March 7, 2021 by Bruce Katz

Dear Painters,

Everywhere flowers are in bloom. Let’s put a few on our tables and paint them from life in this workshop on Zoom.

Many of you have told me that you’d love to paint flowers but find it challenging. Let’s break down the process for painting them into bite sized steps to end up with satisfying paintings you’ll feel proud of. Hint: it’s all about shapes, values and color!

It’s spring. Let’s Paint Flowers
Thursday April 8th and Friday, April 9th, 2021
9:00 to 1:00 (Pacific Time) both days
On Zoom from the comfort of your own home!

In this workshop we’ll start with some value sketches in paint and move toward full color paintings.

Here’s the idea:

– You’ll need at least one flower and a glass or vase or jar of water to put it in. Pick the flowers from your garden, from the park or along your walk. One, two or three flowers in a glass can make a lovely composition.

– You’ll also need a light source that can create some light and shadows on your subject and perhaps some cast shadows too. Then, how about a pretty tablecloth to add some color to the scene?

– The workshop will take place on two consecutive days, 4 hours each day for a total of 8 hours.

– The first day will be spent developing a two-value and then a 4-value “grayscale” sketch of your subjects in paint, followed by a small full color value paint sketch.

– We’ll be doing very small value paint sketches (approx. 4″ – 6″) and our paintings on relatively small surfaces too  (approx. 5×7″, 6×8″, 8×10″ or 9×12″) so that we can mostly complete everything during the two-day workshop.

– You can join the Zoom workshop on your laptop, desktop or iPad.

– A materials list will be sent to you as soon as you register.

– The cost of the workshop is $100.This amount will be fully refundable up to 3 days prior to the workshop; after that the registration fee is non-refundable.

** Please note that this month I won’t be adding a second workshop so if you’re interested let me know ASAP as the workshops often fill up quickly.

Still Life Workshop: Bon Appetít!

February 10, 2021 by Bruce Katz

Dear Painters,

What’s your favorite food? I’ve got many, but one is definitely peanut butter & jelly sandwiches. I think that’s what I’ll paint (again) in this next workshop.

Let’s set up our favorite food(s) on our tables at home, put a spot light on them and paint them from life in this workshop.

Think Wayne Thiebaud or Duane Keiser or Julian Merrow-Smith or Van Gogh or even Andy Warhol. (But your still life doesn’t have to be inspired by any artist in particular.)

Think coffee & donuts or tea with toast & jam or tacos or pasta with meatballs & tomato sauce or cheeseburgers & fries or Chinese food in take-out containers or pizza or oysters or a martini with olives, etc., etc. Getting hungry? The choices are endless!

Let’s have fun and at the same time focus on values and color, which will help us create dimension, realism and a great design.

Still Life: Bon Appetít!
Thursday March 4th and Friday, March 5th, 2021
9:00 to 1:00 (Pacific Time) both days
On Zoom from the comfort of your own home!

In this workshop you’ll choose the food and create a still life on your studio or home table. Then we’ll sketch and paint!

Here’s the idea:

– The workshop will take place on two consecutive days, 4 hours each day for a total of 8 hours.

– The first day will be spent developing a small grayscale study before we begin to block in our paintings. I’ll demonstrate to start us off on both.

– The second day you’ll continue to work on your paintings and I’ll do a quick demonstration how to go from block in to finished painting. As we progress I’ll be able to review everyone’s work, answer questions, make suggestions, etc.

– I’ll be painting in gouache. You can paint with whatever medium you prefer.

– We’ll be doing very small value sketches (approx. 4″ or 5″) and our paintings on relatively small surfaces too  (approx. 5×7″, 6×8″, 8×10″ or 9×12″) so that we can mostly complete everything during the two-day workshop.

– You can join the Zoom workshop on your laptop, desktop or iPad.

– A materials list will be sent to you as soon as you register.

– I’ve raised the price of the workshop from $90 to $100 to give everyone a little more time to develop your paintings. I’ve noticed that most people need more time than we’ve had to both ask questions and finish their paintings.

This amount will be fully refundable up to 3 days prior to the workshop; after that the registration fee is non-refundable.

** Please note that this month I won’t be adding a second workshop so if you’re interested let me know ASAP as the workshops often fill up quickly.

Zoom Workshop: Painting a Master Study

October 28, 2020 by Bruce Katz

Let’s start the New Year off by studying from the masters!

Doing master studies is an age-old method for learning how to improve our paintings. By emulating the masters we can understand their choices and techniques and apply the lessons learned in our own work.

We’ll focus generally on composition, value and color, though each of you will be able to choose other aspects to concentrate on – such as figure or trees or architecture for example – through your choice of the artist and specific work to study. You’ll be able to build onto your database of techniques, shapes, colors, etc that other artists have used.

Here’s the idea:

– You’ll paint from a digital photo of a favorite artwork by a favorite artist of your choosing. Pick someone whose work you’d like to emulate., someone you’d like to paint more like.

Let’s limit our choices to representational artists whose work is shown in major museum collections and if possible to dead artists. That way we’ll know that enough time has passed for to insure we’re studying from true, time-tested masters. Any famous artist from the Renaissance forward is eligible.

– The workshop will take place on two consecutive days, 3 1/2 hours each day for a total of 7 hours.

– The first day will be spent developing thumbnail greyscale compositional studies and a small color study. I’ll demonstrate to start us off.

– The second day I’ll do some quick demonstrations throughout the session and you’ll all work on your paintings. As we progress I’ll be able to review everyone’s works, answer questions, make suggestions, etc.

– I’ll be painting either in oil or gouache. You can paint with whatever medium you prefer.

– We’ll be sketching and painting on small surfaces (approx. 3″x4″ or smaller for thumbnail sketches and approximately 8″x10″, 6×8″ or 5″x7″ for the paintings) so that we can mostly complete everything during the two-day workshop.

– You can join the Zoom workshop on your laptop, desktop or iPad. A Zoom link will be sent a few days prior to the workshop.

– A materials list will be sent to you soon after you register.

– The workshop will be limited to 9 students.

– The cost of the workshop is $90 for the two days. This amount is refundable in full up to 3 days prior to the workshop; after that the registration fee is non-refundable.

REGISTRATION is a two step process.

    1) Send me an email and let me know you’re planning to register so I can put your name on the list. 2) Send me your payment on either PayPal (pay to bruce@brucekatzstudio.com), Venmo (pay to @Bruce-Katz-9) or by check. I’ll send you my address if you need it. Once I receive your payment you’ll be registered and I will send you a materials list.

Zoom Workshop: “A View Through the Window”

August 9, 2020 by Bruce Katz

Looking through our windows – whether they’re the windows in our homes, studios or cars or whether we’re looking into them or out of them – is one of the ways we see the world around us. Let’s express that in paint!

Painting scenes through our windows – just like painting landscapes or anything else – is about creating the illusion of space and that involves using the techniques of perspective, value and color. Painting the views through our windows is a great opportunity to hone those skills and at the same time to create paintings that are unique and appealing.

Here’s the idea:

– The workshop will take place on two consecutive days, 3 1/2 hours each day for a total of 7 hours.

– The dates are Thursday, November 19th and Friday, November 20th, 9:00-12:30 on both days.

– We’ll paint from our own photos – a view out the window with a part of the wall or room with the window in it…a view looking in, a view through the car windshield…you decide. Get creative!

– I’ll be painting with gouache. You can paint with whatever media works well in your home.

– We’ll paint on small surfaces so that we can complete the painting during the two-day workshop.

– The first day will be spent developing a pencil sketch of our subject to focus on the value relationships in the scene. I’ll demonstrate to start us off.

– The second day I’ll demonstrate my process for developing the painting. Then you all can begin working on your paintings and I’ll be able to go around (on the video conference) and review everyone’s work, answer questions, make suggestions, and generally assist on a step by step basis.

– You can join the workshop on your laptop, desktop or iPad. A link to connect you to the workshop on Zoom will be sent a few days prior to the workshop.

– A materials list will be sent to you as soon as you register to make sure you have time to buy any needed supplies online prior to the workshop.

Zoom Workshop: Creating Space – Painting Interiors

July 26, 2020 by Bruce Katz

Painting interior scenes – just like painting landscapes or anything else – is about creating the illusion of space and that involves using the techniques of perspective, value and color. Painting interiors is a great opportunity to hone those skills and at the same time to create paintings that are unique and appealing.

Here’s the idea:

– The workshop will take place on two consecutive days, 3 hours each day for a total of 6 hours.

– The dates are Thursday, August 27thth and Friday, August 28th, 9:00-noon both days.

– We’ll paint from our own photos of interiors – a room in your house, perhaps, a restaurant scene, a museum scene, etc.

– I’ll be painting with gouache. You can paint with whatever media works well in your home, though I encourage you all to try or continue to practice in this medium, which is so well suited for painting at home and for traveling.

– We’ll paint on small surfaces so that we can complete the painting during the two-day workshop.

– I’ll demonstrate to start us off, showing you my process for developing the painting. Then you all can begin working on your paintings and I’ll be able to go around (on the video conference) and review everyone’s work, answer questions, make suggestions, and generally assist on a step by step basis throughout the workshop.

– We’ll focus on both the perspective drawing, color and value in these paintings.

– You can join the workshop on your laptop, desktop or iPad. A link to connect you to the workshop on Zoom will be sent a few days prior to the workshop.

– A materials list will be sent to you as soon as you register to make sure you have time to buy any needed supplies online prior to the workshop.

– The cost of the workshop is $80 for the two days.

Let’s Paint Flowers – Gouache Workshop

June 17, 2020 by Bruce Katz

It’s summer…let’s paint flowers! Many of you have told me that you’d love to paint flowers but find it challenging. Let’s break down the process for painting them into bite sized steps to end up with satisfying paintings you’ll feel proud of. Hint: it’s all about shapes, values and color!

Here’s the idea:

– The workshop will take place on two consecutive days, 3 hours each day for a total of 6 hours.

– The dates are Thursday, July 9th and Friday, July 10th, 9:00-noon both days.

– You’ll need at least one flower per day and a glass or jar of water to put it in. Pick the flowers from your garden, from the park or along your walk (I won’t tell your neighbor 😉 One, two or three flowers in a glass can make a lovely composition.

– You’ll also need a light source that can create some light and shadows on your subject and perhaps some cast shadows too. Then, how about a pretty tablecloth to add some color to the scene?

– I’ll be painting with gouache. You can paint with whatever media works well in your home, though I encourage you all to try or continue to practice in this medium, which is so well suited for painting at home and for traveling.

– We’ll paint on small surfaces so that we can complete two paintings during the workshop. One of the first day, and the other on the second day.

– I’ll demonstrate briefly to start us off, showing you my process for developing the painting. Then you all can begin working on your paintings and I’ll be able to go around (on the video conference) and review everyone’s work, answer questions, make suggestions, and generally assist on a step by step basis throughout the workshop. At the end of each day we’ll each present our work for a collective critique.

– We’ll focus on both the color and the value in these paintings.

This amount is refundable in full up to 3 days prior to the workshop; after that the registration fee is non-refundable.

At Home Zoom Workshop: Painting in Gouache from Photo Reference

April 30, 2020 by Bruce Katz

Welcome painters! Here’s the idea:

– The workshop will take place on two consecutive days, 3 hours each day for a total of 6 hours.

– The dates are Thursday, May 28th, 9:00-noon and Friday, May 29th, 9:00-noon.

– I’ll be painting with gouache. You can paint with whatever media works well in your home, though I encourage you all to try this very cool medium.

– We’ll use our own photos for the subjects. Choose a photo you’d like to paint from and put it on your iPad. Load the Jackson’s Art Grid app onto your tablet. I’ll show you how to use it and load your photo onto it. You can do that before the workshop date and call me if you’d like some help uploading and grinding the photo. The app makes the drawing go much quicker – a handy tool! Try to pick a photo with some large shapes/structures in it and with strong light and dark values. It can be a landscape, cityscape, interior, people, or whatever you’d like. If you can choose a photo with an interesting and dramatic subject, that will give you a painting that is interesting and dramatic!

– I’ll demonstrate to start us off. Then you all can start painting. You’ll work on your paintings and I’ll be able to go around (on the video conference) and review everyone’s work, answer questions, make suggestions, and help everyone generally on a step by step basis throughout the workshop. – A materials list will be sent to you as soon as you register to make sure you have time to buy any needed supplies online prior to the workshop.

1-day Studio Workshop: Values are Sexy!

February 23, 2020 by Bruce Katz

Join me for this 1-day workshop where we’ll focus on values as we develop a still life painting. Many of you have heard me say “color gets all the credit, but values do all the work”. I believe in that and think that appealing, strong, compelling paintings have strong value designs. Hence: Values are Sexy!

Let me show you how to develop a strong value design in your paintings. At the same time we’ll review the other key components of creating an appealing still life: composition, drawing and color.

The workshop is geared for beginning and intermediate painters; those who haven’t begun painting and those who want to continue to develop their painting skills. This workshop will help you take a leap forward in the quality of your work.

The workshop will be held in my studio at Hunters Point Shipyard, San Francisco. It’s limited to a maximum of 6 students. Painters are welcome to paint in oil, acrylic, gouache or other water-based paints. A materials list will be sent to you upon registration in advance of the workshop. If you are just starting out in painting, I will provide the paints and brushes for you for this class, to give you the opportunity to experiment before deciding to invest in these materials.

Cost of workshop: $80. This amount is refundable in full up to 1 week prior to the workshop; after that the registration fee is non-refundable.

To register: On PayPal send $80 to Bruce Katz Studio (bruce@brucekatzstudio.com). Or email to for me address to send me a check.

1-day Studio Workshop: Value & Color

January 3, 2020 by Bruce Katz

No matter what subject matter you’re painting (landscape, still life, portrait) or what your reference is (painting from life in your studio, painting plein air or using photos), value and color are the two most important things you’ll need to address. They’re the two things that will really make a big difference in the quality of your painting.

Join me in this 1-day workshop and let’s spend a day practicing the following:

1. Value: How to identify a range of values in your subject matter in order to create perspective and realism in your painting; How to keep those values clearly differentiated in the painting process; How to express a range of values in a given color.

2. Color: How to mix the colors you see you want to paint; How to saturate/de-saturate colors to create realism and perspective in your paintings; How to change the “color temperature” (cool, warm) in order to express your subject accurately.

We’ll do a series of exercises, focusing on a variety of objects on the table. You’ll come away with the skills to express a clear value design in your paintings and the confidence to mix whatever colors you want to achieve.

The workshop is geared for newer and intermediate painters; for anyone who wants to continue to develop their painting skills. This workshop will help you take a leap forward in the quality of your work.

The workshop will be held in my studio at Hunters Point Shipyard, San Francisco. It’s limited to a maximum of 7 students. Painters are welcome to paint in oil, acrylic, gouache or other water-based paints. A materials list will be sent to you upon registration in advance of the workshop.

Cost of workshop: $80. This amount is refundable in full up to 1 week prior to the workshop; after that the registration fee is non-refundable.

To register: Just let me know via email that you want to register and pay the registration fee on PayPal (send $80 to Bruce Katz Studio (bruce@brucekatzstudio.com). Or email me for my address to send a check.

1-day Workshop: Finding Values in Plein Air

October 23, 2019 by Bruce Katz

You know the adage: “Value does all the work; color gets all the credit”. I’d say “values” in your painting play as important a role as composition. And a good composition is the foundation for a good painting. Let’s focus on finding values in plein air!

I’ll start this class doing a short value sketch demo on paper, in order to establish the value design in a given scene. Each of you will do the same and we’ll have a value “roadmap” for our paintings.

The location will be The Great Meadow at Fort Mason in SF, where we’ll have an opportunity to paint a variety of subject matter, including the Bay, Alcatraz, the cityscape and more.

The workshop is for beginning and intermediate plein air painters that want to learn the process and best practices for painting outdoors in the landscape. I’ll work with you individually in a hands-on, step-by-step fashion, guiding you from start to finish of your painting. I’ll focus on aspects of the process including composition, drawing, color, paint handling, and in particular: VALUE!

There will be a limit of 10 students in the workshop.

Materials: A materials list will be emailed to you once you’ve registered, in advance of the workshop. In addition to sketching materials, paints, canvases and brushes, you will need to bring a portable easel.

Cost of workshop: $80. This amount is refundable in full up 2 weeks prior to the workshop.

To register: email me and let me know you’d like to register for the workshop. Then you can either pay the registration fee on PayPal (you don’t need to be a member of PayPal to do so; just go on and send the money to bruce@brucekatzstudio.com) or send me a check to my home address.

New Work: 3-Person Show at Studio Gallery

I will work with you individually in a hands-on, step-by-step fashion, guiding you from the start to finish of your painting. I’ll focus on aspects of the process including composition, drawing, perspective, color, value and paint handling. The class goal is that you’ll leave with confidence and knowledge to continue to develop as a plein air painter, as well as learning to broaden your potential subject matter. I’ll begin with a short demonstration painting to get the class started, followed by participants setting up and painting their own subjects. We’ll continue the day with short demonstrations at each stage of the painting process, followed by you continuing to develop your paintings.

1-day Workshop: Painting With Gouache in the Landscape

June 10, 2019 by Bruce Katz

For those who want to try out gouache in the landscape, here’s an opportunity. Or if you’d rather use oils or acrylics, that’s fine too. I’ll work with you in whatever medium you choose.

Gouache is a medium that I enjoy using because of it’s fast drying properties and because I like the beautiful finish it produces on paper. For some reason, using gouache encourages me to loosen up…another reason I like it. And it’s great to travel with!

I’ll do a demonstration in gouache, but of course we’ll still focus on all the principles of plein air that are important to the process and to producing satisfying paintings.

The location is TBD (probably a park in SF).

For beginning and intermediate plein air painters that want to learn the process and best practices for painting outdoors in the landscape (“en plein air”). I will work with you individually in a hands-on, step-by-step fashion, guiding you from start to finish of your painting.

1-day Workshop: Finding Values in the Plein Air Landscape

May 5, 2019 by Bruce Katz

You know the adage: “Value does all the work; color gets all the credit”. I’d say “values” in your painting play as important a role as composition. And a good composition is the foundation for a good painting. Let’s focus on finding values in plein air!

I’ll start this class doing a short value sketch demo on paper, in order to establish the value design in a given scene. Each of you will do the same and we’ll have a value “roadmap” for our paintings.

The location will be Old Lakeville Road #3 in Petaluma, where we’ll have an opportunity to paint a variety of subject matter, including barns, old farmhouses, farm animals and the beautiful Sonoma County landscape. Old Lakeville Road #3 is a horseshoe shaped road, which intersects with Lakeville Highway in two places. Let’s meet close to the northernmost intersection of Old Lakeville Road #3 and Lakeville Highway.

1-day Studio Workshop: Value & Color

March 12, 2019 by Bruce Katz

To register: On PayPal send $80 to Bruce Katz Studio (bruce@brucekatzstudio.com). Or email me for my address to send a check.

At Home Zoom Workshop: Let’s Paint Flowers

January 18, 2019 by Bruce Katz

It’s spring…let’s paint flowers!

– The dates are Thursday, June 25th and Friday, June 26th, 9:00-noon both days.

1-day Workshop: Painting From Photo Reference

April 16, 2018 by Bruce Katz

Learn best practices and technique for painting from photos. I’ll focus on key aspects of the painting process: selecting the composition, transferring the drawing, creating the right colors and values and improving your brushwork.

You’ll need to bring a digital image of the painting to class on an iPad and I’ll demonstrate how you’ll go about transferring a drawing of the photo onto your canvas. Please download the app “Jackson’s Art Grid” to your device, which we’ll be using to do that. If it’s not possible to bring the digital image, we’ll be able to work with a quality printout of your photo.

I’ll do several demonstrations during the course of the day, followed by each of you working on the next stage of your paintings. I’ll work with you individually, in a hands-on, step-by-step fashion, guiding you from start to finish and focusing on all aspects of the process.

A materials list – including instructions about loading the app onto your iPad – will be sent to you upon registration.

The workshop will be held in my studio at Hunter Point Shipyard, San Francisco and is limited to 7 people.

Cost of workshop: $80. This amount is refundable in full up to 2 weeks prior to the workshop; after that the registration fee is non-refundable but can be transferable.

The fee for students who would like to sign up for a package of 4 workshops to be taken between now and the end of 2018 is $240 ($60.00 per workshop), to be paid in advance of the first one.

1-day Workshop: Copying a Painting By a Favorite Artist

November 15, 2017 by Bruce Katz

Creating a small study of a “master” painting (a favorite painting of a well-known artist) is a great learning exercise that can be done at any experience level – from beginner to advanced. For all of us, the exercise can teach a lot about all the various aspects of the painting process: composition, drawing, color, value and brushwork. It is also a lot of fun and I highly recommend it!

In this 1-day workshop, you will choose (prior to the class) a painting by one of your favorite famous painters. You’ll bring a digital image of the painting to class on an iPad and I’ll demonstrate how you’ll go about transferring the drawing/composition of the painting onto your canvas (with the help of the Jackson’s Art Grid app) and then proceeding to paint it from there.

I’ll do several demonstrations during the course of the day, followed by each of you working on the next stage of your paintings. I’ll work with you individually, in a hands-on, step-by-step fashion, guiding you from start to finish and focusing on all aspects of the process.

The result will be a small “study” copy of the master painting…along with all you’ve learned during the day about the elements that make up a good painting.

Painters are welcome to paint in either oil or acrylics.

The fee for students who would like to sign up for a package of 4 workshops to be taken during the calendar year 2018 is $270 ($67.50 per workshop), to be paid in advance of the first one.

1-Day Workshop in Alameda: Creating Color: How to Mix Colors to Develop Expressive and Captivating Paintings

March 29, 2017 by Bruce Katz

Join me at the Frank Bette Center for the Arts in Alameda, CA for this 1-day workshop where I’ll teach a simple and practical version of color theory and the process of mixing a wide range of colors and values.

After we review the ideas in color theory, we’ll develop color charts that we’ll make together, mixing many combinations of colors on your palette to create new ones and answer your questions about how to mix certain colors. Once we’ve finished the chart, we’ll put these skills into practice using simple still life objects.

Here are the topics we’ll work on:

• Basic color theory and the vocabulary of color.

• Mixing a full range of colors from a limited palette of primary colors only.

• Working with an expanded palette to create even more variations of color.

• Using color to express values, from the darkest shadow values to the brightest objects in the light.

• Understanding “cool” and “warm” colors and how to apply them to your painting.

• Expanding the number of greens on your palette.

• Making greys and blacks and how to use them with the other colors on the palette.

And finally…
• Practicing the lessons learned by painting some still life objects.

Please register for the workshop on the Frank Bette Center for the Arts website www.frankbettecenter.org. Once you do, they’ll send you a materials list. It’s basically the same materials list I always use, except for the panels to paint on. Please bring two large panels (Canvas board is great or a wooden panel that has a gesso finish is also good). These should be approximately 12”x16”. We’ll use one to create the color chart and the other to divide into 6 small squares for practice painting.
