1-day Workshop: Finding Values in the Plein Air Landscape
October 17 @ 9:30 am - 3:00 pm$80
You know the adage: “Value does all the work; color gets all the credit”. I’d say “values” in your painting play as important a role as composition. And a good composition is the foundation for a good painting. Let’s focus on finding values in plein air!
I’ll start this class doing a short value sketch demo on paper, in order to establish the value design in a given scene. Each of you will do the same and we’ll have a value “roadmap” for our paintings.
The location will be Old Lakeville Road #3 in Petaluma, where we’ll have an opportunity to paint a variety of subject matter, including landscape, barns, farm houses, and cows. Old Lakeville Road #3 is a horseshoe shaped road, which intersects with Lakeville Highway in two places. Let’s meet close to the northernmost intersection of Old Lakeville Road #3 and Lakeville Highway.
The workshop is for beginning and intermediate plein air painters that want to learn the process and best practices for painting outdoors in the landscape. I’ll work with you individually in a hands-on, step-by-step fashion, guiding you from start to finish of your painting. I’ll focus on aspects of the process including composition, drawing, color, paint handling, and in particular: VALUE!
There will be a limit of 10 students in the workshop.
Materials: A materials list will be emailed to you once you’ve registered, in advance of the workshop. In addition to sketching materials, paints, canvases and brushes, you will need to bring a portable easel.
